A Workshop Opportunity for Early Career Researchers

Sponsored by the British Council under the Newton Fund Researcher Links scheme, this workshop is organised jointly by Worcester Business School, ITU Ginova Entrepeneurship & Innovation Centre and ITU ARI Teknokent.

The workshop takes place in Istanbul Technical University, Turkey on 21-25 March 2016.

The workshop is being co-ordinated by Dr Scott Andrews from the University of Worcester and Dr Deniz Tuncalp from the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), and will have contributions from other leading researchers from the UK and Turkey.

We are now inviting early-career researchers (for eligibility please see below) from the UK and Turkey to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme.

THEME

An ancient proverb states: “Tell me and I will listen, Show me and I will observe, Involve me and I will learn.”

Extensive practice and research into management education has led to new and innovative learning approaches, which have had a positive impact on learners in a global learning context. Research into student-centred learning practices, including the development of innovative approaches in management case study delivery and work-based learning (WBL), has examined the impact on learning and subsequent employability of learners. Entrepreneurial SMEs housed in university technoparks and incubators often partner with universities and other higher education institutes (HEIs) for training and consulting support and benefit greatly from WBL initiatives. This workshop seeks to share insights into activities undertaken to examine student-centred learning approaches adopted in management education in the UK and Turkey and to consider the positive cultural impact and implications of adopting shared/collaborative approaches to learning in this very topical, fast-developing sector.

The workshop aims to bring together leading researchers and mentors, young early career researchers and commercial practitioners, providing a unique opportunity for exchanging knowledge, sharing best practice in participant-centred learning and networking.

Presentations from experts in the field will provide delegates with an overview of the new approaches to management education, with a particular focus on the latest developments in management case studies and approaches to work-based learning.

Early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of posters/short oral presentations and discuss this with established researchers from the UK and Turkey. There will be a focus on building up links for future collaborations and participants will be selected on the basis of their research potential and ability to build longer term links.

• Identify and document interesting and local entrepreneurship examples from Turkey as case studies through published proceedings of the workshop

• Develop European case study repositories with non-Western (primarily Turkish) multilingual examples, with support of Case Centre

• Showcase future pioneers in participant-centred research across Turkey, through continued blogs, e-bulletins, and ‘story-telling’ of good practice through a UK/Turkey Participant Centred Learning Network

• Afternoon Keynote lecture: Cross Cultural Management, Turkey vs. UK

• Afternoon Discussion: Showcasing good practice and establishing themed research groups for future cross-cultural collaboration – “Understanding the local context for teaching and researching international business”

• Day 3 Closure – Early Career Researcher Open Forum

DAY 4: Thursday 24th (Key theme: Work-based Learning Day)

• Formal keynote lecture: Scope for Work Based Learning Practices

• Morning workshops – developing Work Based learning initiatives – Collaboration with industry and other non-academic partners to talk about cross-sectoral collaboration. [Speakers from Technoparks, Industry Associations, etc.]

• Lunch

• Afternoon seminar sessions – Future development of the UK/Turkey Participant Centred Learning Network

• Further dissemination of proceedings of the workshop

• Next steps to embed learning and future collaboration

• Evening – Formal Workshop Gala Dinner (keynote speaker – Changing Times for Turkey)

Day 5: Friday 25th (Optional) Cultural Visit to Istanbul

LOCATION

• The workshop will take place in the Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey.

• On ITU Campus, the conference centre of ARI-3 Building will be hosting our worksop.

ELIGIBILITY

• Participants must be early career researchers, holding a PhD (or equivalent research experience) and have no more than 10 years post-doctoral experience (equivalent to ‘Recognised Researcher’ or ‘Experienced Researcher’ categories in the EU framework for researchers careers). Consideration will be given to researchers with more than 10 years post-doctoral experience who have taken extended career breaks.

• Participants must have a research or academic position (a permanent post, research contract, or fellowship, etc) at a recognised research institution either in the UK or Turkey.

• Researchers who are currently working towards a Masters or PhD award may also consider presenting as part of a poster presentation but will not be eligible for travel reimbursement
